Cyber Resilience Week - Abuse and Violence

Alert message sent 07/11/2018 09:26:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

It's day 3 of Cyber Resilience week and Buckinghamshire wide organisations are raising awareness around abuse and violence.

Abuse can happen on the web through various channels such as social media networks, online games or mobile phones. Cyberbullying, grooming, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation or emotional abuse may be experienced.

Anyone can be at risk of online abuse from people they know, as well as strangers- perpetrators will often pray on the vulnerable. The abuse may happen in the real world (such as bullying) or it may only happen online (persuading young people to take part in sexual activity online).

People feel like there is no escape from the abuse as the abusers can contact them whenever they like- images and videos can be stored and shared with others.

If you are concerned about a child you can contact the NSPCC 24 hour helpline for advice and support- help@nspcc.org.uk 0808 800 5000.

Further concerns can be reported through the following:
National Bullying Helpline: www.nationalbullyinghelpline.co.uk  0845 22 55 787 / 07734 701221
National Stalking Helpline on 0808 802 0300, by email at advice@stalkinghelpline.org

You can also visit Get Safe Online to find out more about online abuse https://www.getsafeonline.org/social-networking/online-abuse/

There is also advice on the Thames Valley Police website.

Why not log on to the Thames Valley Cyber Crime forum which is taking place on Thursday 8th November between 7-9pm and ask our panel of professionals questions from the comfort of your own home: http://thamesvp.coverpage.coveritlive.com/?
